QUNO Attends 54th Session of the IPCC and 14th Session of the Working Group 1

Friday marked the close of the 54th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and 14th Session of the Working Group 1 , during which State delegates considered contributions to the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report (AR6).  QUNO, for FWCC, is one of the most active observers at IPCC Plenary meetings.  QUNO’s Representative for Human Impacts of Climate Change, Lindsey Fielder Cook, was in attendance throughout  the two-week virtual meetings.

QUNO NY Programme Assistants Present at New York Yearly Meeting

QUNO NY Programme Assistants (PAs), Molly Burger and Hannah Patterson, recently hosted an interactive discussion on QUNO at New York Yearly Meeting (NYYM) summer sessions. QUNO NY’s Program Assistants have a longstanding tradition of presenting at NYYM. This year’s theme, "Becoming a Sanctuary Where Spirit Dwells," strongly resonated with our PAs regarding the work QUNO does, and we were glad to be able to continue this tradition of engagement, albeit virtually.

QUNO makes an intervention at the June Climate Change Conference

QUNO joined observers at the June Climate Change Conference sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies to the UNFCCC, held this year in a virtual format owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Parties and observers met over the course of three weeks to discuss key issues relating to the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

QUNO Co-Hosts Virtual Dialogue on Prevention with UN, Civil Society, and Member States

The Civil Society – UN Prevention Platform, co-facilitated by QUNO, hosted its first virtual event of 2021. This virtual convening, titled Advancing UN Prevention Efforts Across Sectors and Institutions: Collective Pathways for Effective Prevention, centered on the current state of prevention at the United Nations (UN), building on the Platform’s 2020 Discussion Series on Prevention.

Report on Conscientious Objection to Military Service and Refugee Status Determination

To mark International Conscientious Objectors' Day on the 15 May 2021, QUNO is pleased to be releasing our new publication on conscientious objection and refugee status determination procedures. This report aims to support informed refugee status determination for conscientious objectors to military service seeking asylum by highlighting relevant international and regional standards and jurisprudence and analyzing national guidance.

In & Around the UN

Since our last newsletter in October 2020, QUNO has continued to adjust to the large changes brought about by COVID-19, the killing of George Floyd, and the drama of a bitterly contested US election. Despite all these challenges, including a now more than year-long shift to virtual work, both for our office and our partners in the UN and other peacebuilding organizations, our work has moved forward.

QUNO launches new publication How to be a Hero for all our Children

QUNO’s Human Impacts of Climate Change programme is pleased to launch their new publication “How to be a Hero for All our Children”. Gathering climate science from the latest reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), alongside suggested personal actions and questions for politicians, “How to be a Hero” is an accessible resource to share with local communities and as part of educational initiatives.

QUNO attends Virtual 53rd Session of the IPCC

QUNO, representing the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), is the only faith-based observer of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  Its 53rd (bis) meeting was recently held online from 22-26 March and involved over 200 participants, primarily States, IPCC Secretariat, and several observers.

QUNO NY Programme Assistants Present at Friends Biannual Meeting

QUNO NY Programme Assistants (PAs), Molly Burger and Hannah Patterson, presented about QUNO to Quakers at the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) Section of the Americas Meeting. The biannual Meeting was held virtually this year due to COVID-19, but still drew together Quakers from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean for worship, workshops, and activities. Molly and Hannah found this virtual space quite engaging in sharing the role of QUNO at the UN, as well as their experiences as Programme Assistants.

The Right to a Healthy Environment at the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council

Efforts to establish a universal human right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment continue at the Human Rights Council. 

On 10th March, at the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council, QUNO's Human Impacts of Climate Change programme endorsed a joint statement by the Right to a Healthy Environment Campaign, under the General Debate on Item 3, calling for the Council to adopt the universal right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
