New research on peaceful societies launched at Quaker House in New York

Together with the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and the United Nations Inter-Agency Framework Team for Preventive Action, QUNO hosted the New York launch of IEP’s new study “Pillars of Peace”, with Mr Steve Killelea AM, Founder and Executive Chair, on 27 September 2013. This new research sets out to understand and measure the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies. Read more and download the report.

QUNO co-hosts a High Level Side Event in the opening week of the 68th General Assembly on Stability and Peace

QUNO and the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding hosted a High Level  Side Event on “Stability & Peace: Finding the Heart of Sustainable Development" at Scandinavia House in New York in the opening week of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, featuring civil society representatives from Kenya, Liberia and Nigeria, the Director General of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, a leading Chinese academic, and Jan Naidoo from South Africa. Ninety diplomats, UN staff and civil society representatives attended.

Water Management and Peacebuilding Seminar at the World Water Week in Stockholm

QUNO held - together with CARE International, Catholic Relief Service, CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food; Howard G. Buffett Foundation; International Institute for Environment and Development and International Union for Conservation of Nature - a seminar on “Water Management and Peacebuilding: Connecting the Local to International Policy” at the Stockholm World Water Week in September. The seminar shared examples of policy and practice that bring water, land and food management together with peacebuilding and rights-based approaches.

QUNO attends UNFCCC Subsidiary Body & Ad Hoc Working Group meetings

QUNO attended the thirty-eighth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 38) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 38), and the second part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-2) under the UNFCCC.

A Conscientious Objector's Guide to the International Human Rights System

QUNO launched a user-friendly Conscientious Objector's Guide to the International Human Rights System. Together with the Centre for Civil and Political Rights, War Resisters International and Conscience and Peace Tax International, QUNO has made this guide available on-line and on paper, in English and in Spanish.

Beijing Seminar on Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding, and Peacemaking

In coordination with the American Friends Service Committee and the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum of the Social Science Research Council, QUNO New York organized a three day seminar for leading Chinese scholars, UN experts, and civil society and academics from Africa on the topic of Towards Coordinated Responses to Conflict: Perspectives on United Nations Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, which took place at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China.

Strengthening local perspectives in peacebuilding

Diane Hendrick from QUNO Geneva and Camilla Campisi from QUNO New York participated in a meeting in Uppsala, Sweden entitled ‘Towards a Comprehensive Strategy for Inclusivity: Strengthening the role of local perspectives in peacebuildling,’ co-organized by the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation.

UN Foundation, International Peace Institute and QUNO bring together UN system around conflict, violence and instability within the post-2015 development agenda

On 26 April, QUNO, UNF and IPI, in collaboration with the Executive Office of the Secretary General, hosted an all-day event with senior representatives of the UN secretariat, agencies, funds and programs on “Conflict, Violence, and Instability in the Post-2015 Development Agenda”. The objective was to facilitate a discussion to identify common insights and objectives across the UN system around the inclusion of issues of peace and stability.

QUNO makes statement at the Human Rights Council 22nd session

QUNO made a statement to the Independent Expert on human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment at the Human Rights Council 22nd session. QUNO drew particular attention to the valuable role that peacebuilding approaches can play in fulfilling procedural rights relating to natural resource management .

Workshop for New Members of the PBC

QUNO New York and the International Peace Institute co-organized a workshop for new and incoming members of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in February 2013. The half-day workshop for expert level diplomats focused on a range of topics relating to the PBC including political accompaniment, reconciliation & peacebuilding, and defining the role of PBC membership.
