Chinese Perspectives on Africa's Peace and Security Challenges: Views from the Field

QUNO, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) convened a two-day workshop in New York that provided a forum for academics from various Chinese institutions to share their research and perspectives on peace and security issues in Africa with a broad policy audience.

QUNO hosts discussion on strengthening the UN-AU partnership

QUNO organized an informal discussion at Quaker House between African Union expert Dr. Cedric de Coning, civil society, UN staff and Member States. This meeting, during which Dr. de Coning provided his perspective on the state of the relationship between the UN and the African Union (AU), was a follow-up to a recent open debate in the Security Council on UN-AU cooperation for greater peace and security. The discussion was an opportunity for New York-based actors to gain insight into the inner workings of the AU and think of ways to enhance UN-AU cooperation from UN headquarters.

Bringing the perspectives of Chinese scholars to the UN

In April, AFSC and QUNO collaborated to bring three Chinese scholars and UN experts to the UN. During their short but productive trip, they presented their research on UN peace operations and shared their perspectives on three recent major UN reviews to a variety of Member States, UN officials, think tanks and other civil society actors in New York. China is becoming increasingly involved in supporting UN peace operations and peacebuilding in conflict-affected and post-conflict states, especially in Africa.

QUNO co-organizes Beijing workshop on UN Peace Practices

QUNO New York, together with the United Nations Association of China (UNA-China), the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) jointly held a workshop entitled “Emerging Views on Global Peace Practice: New Directions in UN Peace Operations at the Occasion of the 70th Anniversary” in Beijing. The workshop brought together Chinese academics, civil society practitioners, and experts from Africa, Europe, and the United Nations to discuss current UN peace strategies and practices.

QUNO Presents at Beijing 70th UN Anniversary Event

QUNO New York Director Andrew Tomlinson was invited by the UN Association of China to be a plenary speaker at a Beijing event celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations. Quakers have had a long association with China, and this was an occasion to renew old acquaintances and make some new contacts.

QUNO hosts a lunch discussion on "Peacebuilding in the African Great Lakes Region: A view from China"

A diverse and engaged group of UN staff, member states, and civil society members gathered at Quaker House in New York on 7 November to hear a group of leading Chinese academics share their work on Peacebuilding in the African Great Lakes Region. It was a lively conversation, with many personal anecdotes and the sharing of experiences from many different actors.

Beijing Seminar on Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding, and Peacemaking

In coordination with the American Friends Service Committee and the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum of the Social Science Research Council, QUNO New York organized a three day seminar for leading Chinese scholars, UN experts, and civil society and academics from Africa on the topic of Towards Coordinated Responses to Conflict: Perspectives on United Nations Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, which took place at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in China.

Chinese Scholars Visit New York

QUNO and the American Friends Service Committee hosted a visit by four leading UN scholars from China to the UN in New York. The visit included a public event, co-hosted with the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum, entitled “Chinese Perspectives on UN Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding”. The event, attended by UN staff, diplomats, and NGOs, provided an introduction to current research activities within China and an opportunity for informal discussion and exchange.

Chinese delegation visit to Burundi and DRC

QUNO New York in collaboration with the American Friends Service Committee hosted a delegation visit of six Chinese academics to Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation members to gain a deeper understanding of UN peacebuilding and prevention efforts on the ground.
