Interactive Event: Diplomacy for Sustainable Development

On 16 July 2024 QUNO NY partnered with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPACC) to host an interactive event during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF, see more about the Forum below), which simulated building political will for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the wake of the real impact of climate change, the simulation was structured around the need for a transition to sustainable energy production that halts fossil fuel expansion, manages a just phase-out of coal, oil, and gas, and ensures a fair energy transition for all. Representatives from non-governmental organizations, civil society, and other UN stakeholders roleplayed the development of a joint action plan under the recently proposed Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. They took on roles as various parties, including faux-states and nonstate actors such as, a coalition of Indigenous Peoples communities and a civil society network. Participants were challenged to advocate for their respective goals and interests while striving to cooperate. Through multiple rounds of negotiations, sidebar conversations, and drafted statements, participants worked to reach consensus on the points of the Action Plan.

This simulation was a continuation of two events in which QUNO NY participated, one in December 2023 and a similar simulation run by QUNO at the UN in May 2024. Learn more about these events here: December event and May event.

The HLPF is a subdivision of the UN General Assembly and the UN Economic and Social Council and is responsible for monitoring implementation of the UN’s development policies including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Every year the HLPF reviews commitment and progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In 2024, HLPF reviewed in-depth:

  • Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
  • Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
  • Goal 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
  • Goal 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
  • Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
