QUNO’s Human Impact of Climate Change (HICC) team, Lindsey and Anna, spent the past two weeks at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations in Bonn, Germany, advocating for urgent, equitable, near-term available-at-scale climate policies. Negotiations were tense and Parties disagreed over key issues on climate finance and mitigation.

This year marked the 11th year of quiet diplomacy dinners at the UNFCCC. The dinners aim to help build communication and understanding between a diverse group of countries. The dinners offer an off-the-record space to encourage open and personal discussions and continue due to appreciation for the space.  

At the negotiations, Lindsey and Anna distributed two publications: ‘A Government Official’s Toolkit’ and ‘Climate Change: What We Can Do’. Both publications cite the most recent climate science and are available in four languages: English, French, Spanish, and Arabic. Lindsey also moderated an official side event, co-organized by Quaker Earthcare Witness, Quakers in Britain, Friends World Committee for Consultation, Soka Gakkai International, and Soka Gakkai Britain. The panel ‘How ethical values can guide more effective and successful NDC climate policies’ explored how different sectors—from farming to adaptation—can ground policies in ethical values. At the Action and Climate Empowerment (ACE) poster gallery, Anna presented a selected poster on what we can do, using the most recent climate science.

QUNO’s advocacy will continue as climate negotiations looks towards the 29th Conference of Parties in Baku, Azerbaijan.
