QUNO New York celebrates 75 years of Quaker peace and justice work at the UN
On 9 June, over 140 Friends, colleagues and supporters gathered in New York City to mark the rich, 75-year history of the Quaker UN Office. “Quakers have consistently served as Ambassadors for Peace. In that effort we have emphasized the importance of listening to, and lifting up voices that otherwise might not be reflected in UN decision-making…In the world of global diplomacy, having the space to connect, build relationships, and share, offers the chance for transformation.” These words were shared by QUNO NY’s Director, Sarah Clarke, as she spoke at the celebration of this remarkable milestone.
The evening’s program also welcomed student musicians from Brooklyn Friends School who provided musical performances to kick-off and close out the evening. The keynote address, delivered by Ambassador Olof Skoog of the European Union, highlighted the impact of QUNO’s work at the UN and drew attention to the urgent need of Quaker working methods in today’s divided world. Remarks were also provided by Cheryl Morden, co-clerk of the Quaker UN Committee, and Joyce Ajlouny, General Secretary of the American Friends Service Committee.
