IPCC 58th Session
QUNO, speaking as Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), took part in an approval process to finalize the Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which collates the full findings of the 6th Assessment Report. From 13-19th March, 135 states and over 150 observers took part in negotiations to finalize the language of the Synthesis Report to communicate to policy makers worldwide the latest climate science. This report synthesizes the full findings of the 6th Assessment Report, specifically the Physical Science, Adaptation and Vulnerability, and Mitigation of Climate Change. While the findings of the Summary for Policy Makers (SPM) are exposed to sentence-by-sentence approval by member states, the Longer Report of more detailed scientific findings is subject to approval but not debate. The IPCC has the right to refuse Member States' suggestions if they challenge the integrity of the science. QUNO made 24 interventions, the focus of which were around the need for urgent, real, transformative, rights-based and ethical climate policies to protect this beautiful planet and all species. On the evening of the 19th, during the closing of the session, QUNO delivered its own closing statement and one on behalf of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference which can be watched here. Earth Negotiations Bulletin highlighted our interventions an unprecedented 21 times which can be read about here and all 24 can be read in their entirety, along with their relevant text and the response they received at the pdf below.
